The Greek Orthodox Community of NSW celebrates the 82nd Anniversary of ‘OXI’ Day
The Greek Orthodox Community of New South Wales celebrated the 82nd Anniversary of ‘OXI’ Day of 28 October 1940 with great grandeur on the evening of Friday, October 28, at the Community Club, in the Sydney suburb of Lakemba.
Many officials from the Greek and Australian Authorities attended. Among the guests were the President Mr. Harry Danalis, the Secretary Mr. M. Tsilimos and the members of the Board of Directors of The Greek Orthodox Community of NSW, the Consul General of Greece in Sydney Mr. Yannis Mallikourtis, His Grace Bishop Christodoulos of Magnesia, who represented His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia, Mr Mark Coure, MP, Minister for Multiculturalism and Seniors for NSW, Mr Stephen Kamper, MP, who represented the Leader of the Opposition in NSW, Mr Chris Minns, Ms Sophie Cotsis, MP, who represented the Minister for Indigenous Australians, Ms Linda Burney, Mr Peter Poulos, MLC, Mr Jihad Dib, MP, Ms Courtney Houssos, MLC, Mayors, Councillors, media, Association representatives and a great number of other people.
The students of the Greek Afternoon School in Panania of the NSW Greek Orthodox Community sang the National Anthems of Australia and Greece and then a minute’s silence was observed in memory of those who lost their lives for Greece.
Then Mr. Danalis spoke and referred to the importance of this day for Hellenism and humanity. The Consul General, Mr. Yannis Mallikourtis, His Grace Bishop Christodoulos of Magnesia, Mr. Christodoulos, Mr. Mark Coure, MP, Mr. Stephen Kamper, MP, and Ms. Sophie Cotsis, MP, also spoke.
The students Emmanuel Kasadelis and Anastasios Bozatzis, of the Community High School in Panania, presented “The History of the Day in Greek”.
The student Anastasia Parasiri, from the Afternoon Greek School in Panania, recited the poem “OXI”.
The Student Katerini Bozatzis, from the Afternoon Greek School in Panania, recited the poem “28th October 1940”
The Student Zacharias Kasadelis, from the Afternoon Greek School in Panania, recited the poem “ZITO, ZITO / VIVA, VIVA”
The Students of the School in Panania of the Greek Orthodox Community of NSW, sang the song “Koroido Mouzoulini” by Sofia Vembo.
The School presentation closed with the dance group of the Greek Orthodox Community of NSW, under the direction of dance teacher Ms. Paroula Therban.
The Master of Ceremonies of the night was Ms Artemis Theodoris, Member of the Board of Directors of the Greek Orthodox Community of NSW.
Following the formalities of the evening, food and drink were offered to all those who attended.
