The Open Air Museum for ANZAC’s in Lemnos, at the centre of important meetings for Lina Mendoni
The Minister of Culture and Sports of Greece, Mrs Lina Mendoni, during her visit to Sydney, on Bright Monday, at 4.30 in the morning, attended the traditional ceremony for ANZAC Day.
During the event, Mrs Mendoni had a conversation with the Premier of New South Wales, Mr Dominic Perrottet, about the role played by Lemnos during the First World War.
The presence of the Minister in the commemorative events of Anzac Day is of special importance, as it is emphasised in an announcement of the Ministry, as the implementation of the program of the Open Air Museum begins in Lemnos, which aims to highlight the important role of Lemnos as a base for the campaign, military camp, supply, medical care and recuperation of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC).
The program includes the erection of a monument in honor of the ANZAC’s and their contribution to the First World War, the creation of routes, special signs and information points in the historic site of Lemnos, where the allied forces cemeteries are located.
The program will be implemented with funding from the Veterans Ministry of the Australian Government, in the framework of a Memorandum of Cooperation signed with the Greek Ministry of National Defense.
As the area is declared a historic site, the Ministry of Culture and Sports cooperates in the program, as it has direct responsibility.
Afterwards, Mrs Mendoni met with Mr Ben Franklin, State Minister for Aboriginal Affairs, the Arts and Regional Youth. The subject of the meeting, which took place in a very warm atmosphere, was the development of cooperation in the field of Culture between the two countries, both in the field of cultural heritage and in contemporary culture. A special mention, during the meeting, was made in the preparation of a bilateral agreement between Greece and Australia on tackling the illicit trafficking of cultural goods, an area of particular interest for Australia as well.
