Church of Greece Holy Synod members expected to discuss abhorrent war in Ukraine; Russian Church’s ‘intrusion’ into Africa

The regularly scheduled March sessions of the Holy Synod of the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Greece began on Monday, with Synodal hierarchs expected to consider the abhorrent war still raging in predominately Orthodox Ukraine.

According to sources who spoke to the Orthodoxia news agency, the Church of Greece’s Holy Synod will also deal with what the Patriarchate of Alexandria has decried as the Russian Church’s “intrusion” into its ecclesiastical jurisdiction, with the establishment of a non-canonical Exarchate of Africa.

Greek President honors Archbishop, Holy Synod on occasion of Sunday of Orthodoxy

A day earlier, on the occasion of the commemoration of the Sunday of Orthodoxy, Greece’s president of the republic, Katerina Sakellaropoulou, hosted a reception at the presidential mansion for the Archbishop of Athens and All Greece, His Beatitude Ieronymos, and members of the Holy Synod.

In reply to an address by Sakellaropoulou, His Beatitude emphasised that initiatives and programs underway in the country to host Ukrainian war refugees demonstrate the fruitful cooperation between Church and state in Greece.
