Ecumenical Patriarch’s appeal to the environment is of historical importance
The Italian public television RAI characterizes the appeal for the environment addressed by the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, Pope Benedict, and the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, as an initiative of exceptional and historical importance.
Their call, ahead of the Cop26 International Climate Summit in Glasgow in November, concerns environmental sustainability, the effects of climate change on the world’s poorest people, and the importance of international cooperation.
“This is the first time such a joint initiative has been taken by the religious leaders of Christianity,” Italian television said. “Whatever one’s religion or worldview, we must heed the call of the Earth,” Christianity said in a statement, according to the Italian channel.
The Ecumenical Patriarch, the Pope, and the Archbishop of Canterbury add that “the loss of biodiversity, the destruction of the environment and climate change are an inevitable consequence of our actions since we have consumed more resources than the planet could bear.”
The three religious leaders call on the faithful to pray ahead of the international summit “Cop26” and at the same time emphasize: “We are facing another, huge injustice. “The people who suffer the most from the catastrophic consequences of this abuse at the expense of our planet are its poorest inhabitants, who have the smallest share of responsibility.”
