25th March commemorations in the Archdiocesan District of Melbourne
On Sunday, 27 March, 2022, A doxology was performed and wreaths were laid by The Hellenic Branch of the RSL (Returned and Services League) to officially commemorate 25th March 1821, in Melbourne. On the day of the historic anniversary, on Friday morning, a doxology was performed at the Church of Saint Eustathios in South Melbourne.
Afterwards, His Grace Bishop Kyriakos of Sozopolis, assisted by the priests Father Christos and Father Panteleimon, officiated the memorial service for the rest of the Fighters and defenders of freedom of 1821, This was followed by the laying of wreaths at the Greek-Australian Monument and the Shrine of Remembrance, with the participation of more than 40 Greek-expatriate and Australian organisations.
Present at the events of honour and memory were many citizens and officials, including the Consul General of Greek in Melbourne, Mr. Emmanuel Kakavelakis, who spoke about the importance of the anniversary,
MP Maria Vamvakinou, as representative of the federal opposition leader, Anthony Albanese, Martin Foley MP, as representative of the State Premier of Victoria, Daniel Andrews, Anthi Sidiropoulou and Chris Sikavitsas, representing the President of the Greek Orthodox Community of Melbourne and Victoria, Mr. Vassilis Papastergiadis.
This was followed by a gathering with a light meal in the hall of the Hellenic RSL Branch.
