Wildfire prompts emergency alert in Hania

A wildfire broke out Wednesday afternoon in Rapaniana, Hania, burning through farmland and forested areas and prompting an emergency 112 alert.

Authorities issued the message shortly after 6 p.m., urging residents to remain on standby.

According to local reports, the fire began in a reed bed, which helped fuel its rapid spread.

Twelve fire engines, 24 firefighters and two specialized ground teams with 12 personnel were deployed.

Public broadcaster ERT reported the fire was burning near residential areas with hotels but appeared to be improving by evening. No evacuations have been ordered and firefighting efforts continue.
