UN Secretary-General condemns terrorist attack on Prophet Elias Church in Damascus

The UN Secretary-General has strongly condemned the terrorist attack that took place on Sunday at the Greek Orthodox Church of Prophet Elias in Damascus. Expressing deep condolences to the families of the victims and wishing a swift recovery to the injured, he emphasised the urgent need for accountability.

According to preliminary investigations, the Syrian transitional authorities have attributed responsibility for the attack to the Islamic State (ISIL). The Secretary-General called for a full and thorough investigation into the incident.

Reaffirming the United Nations’ commitment to supporting the Syrian people in their pursuit of peace, dignity, and justice, the Secretary-General underscored the importance of protecting vulnerable communities.

“We have seen minorities in Syria tested. I also believe we have seen the government make significant efforts to reassure these minorities. It is imperative that transitional authorities ensure all minorities, whether religious, ethnic, or otherwise, feel welcomed and that their voices are heard in Syria,” stated Stéphane Dujarric, the spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, during a press briefing at the UN headquarters.
