Thessaloniki’s Byzantine Walls to be lit up

The Ministry of Culture will illuminate Thessaloniki’s 4.5-kilometer Byzantine Walls through a donation by Metlen Group, with lighting design by the acclaimed Eleftheria Deko, who has also done the lighting for the Acropolis in Athens.

At a press conference on Wednesday, Culture Minister Lina Mendoni emphasised the project’s cultural and environmental sensitivity, calling the walls “one of the most impressive fortification complexes of the Byzantine Empire.”

Thessaloniki Mayor Stelios Angeloudis said, “Lighting is culture, growth, innovation and future.”

Metlen CCCO Vivian Bouzali added, “We want to light a piece of the city’s soul.” Deko noted: “The walls tell the city’s story. The lighting will respectfully highlight that history.”

The study will finish in 2025, with project completion expected by 2026.
