The Sacred Spring of Saint Euthymios at the Phanar

Between the precincts of the Ecumenical Patriarchate (on its eastern side) and the Maraslio Municipal School there is an uphill road, so uphill that steps have been built to climb it – even as the staircase, which narrows a little further up, ends in a dead end! An ancient wall, probably a remnant of the Byzantine fortification, stands at the end of the staircase and seems to support the poor apartment buildings that sprang up on the heights of the Phanar and face the roofs of Maraşlı and the Golden Horn.

At the end of the stairs, however, there is a corridor on the right that leads to the door of a small house with a yard. The arbitrary house literally stands next to the Tower of the patriarchal complex.

There is situated the Sacred Spring of Saint Euthymios. An arch, which does not exceed a height of 1.50m, and a metal awning instead of a floor, which, opening it, you can see the deep well.

Several times now, on the feast day of the memory of Saint Euthymios, on January 20, the Patriarch also goes and conducts a Paraklesis Supplication Service. This year, the celebration was performed by Grand Protosyncellus Archimandrite Gregorios and clergy of the Patriarchal Court.
