Sydney: Agiasmos to bless the beginning of the new academic year with record student cohort at St. Spyridon College

In an atmosphere of joy and optimism, the new academic year began at St. Spyridon College in Sydney.

2023 was a landmark year for the Greek Orthodox College as it grandly celebrated its 40th anniversary and was ranked among the top 100 day schools in New South Wales in the final HSC examinations.

The 2024 school year begins with equally high expectations and the most positive signs, as the halls of the College welcome the largest student cohort they have ever had (800 students over the 12 grades, plus the pre-kindergarten children).

On Friday, 9 February 2024, the entire student cohort, together with the Head of College Mrs. Amelia Katsogiannis, the teachers and other staff of the College, gathered at the Church of Saint Spyridon Kingsford, to receive the blessing of the Church in light of their new journey in education and knowledge. The President of the Parish, Mr. Elia Economou, and the members of the Board of Directors were also present.

The opening Agiasmos was conducted by His Grace Bishop Iakovos of Miletoupolis, representing His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia, and was accompanied by the clergy of the Church of Saint Spyridon, Fr. Steven Scoutas, Fr. Stavros Ivanos and Fr. Dimitrios Karakiozis. It is worth pointing out that students of the Greek Orthodox College chanted the hymns during the Agiasmos Service.

His Grace Bishop Iakovos addressed to everyone his personal wishes for good progress in their academic year and read the Message of the Archbishop of Australia for the beginning of the new academic year.

Then, His Grace blessed the students and the teaching staff of the school one by one, together with the clergy of the Parish of Saint Spyridon, who at the end of the service made their way to the College campus and blessed all the classrooms, as well as the administration offices.
