Sisi reaffirms Egypt’s commitment to status of Sinai monastery in call with Mitsotakis

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi has reiterated his country’s full commitment to safeguarding the religious status of Saint Catherine’s Monastery in Mount Sinai in a phone conversation with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, according to a report on Egypt’s state-run Middle East News Agency.

The call, initiated by Mitsotakis, took place against the backdrop of growing Greek concern over the implications of the court ruling on the historic Greek Orthodox monastery.

According to Egyptian presidential spokesman Mohamed el-Shenawy, Sisi underlined that a recent judicial ruling regarding the site strengthens this commitment and reflects Egypt’s respect for the sanctity of religious sites as well as the monastery’s enduring cultural, spiritual and religious importance.

Both leaders also discussed the broader context of Greek-Egyptian relations, Shenawy said. They reaffirmed their shared desire to build on the positive momentum in bilateral ties and expressed a mutual commitment to further advancing strategic cooperation across multiple sectors.

In the Greek account of the call, Mitsotakis emphasized the importance of safeguarding the monastery’s status as a Greek Orthodox place of pilgrimage and stressed the need to resolve the issue through institutional channels.
