Scorching heatwave grips Greece, no relief until Thursday

Heatwave conditions are set to continue across most parts of Greece on Sunday, with temperatures soaring close to or above 40°C. Relief from the intense heat is not expected until Thursday.

According to the National Meteorological Service (EMY), the highest temperatures will be felt in Macedonia, Thessaly, Epirus, and the western mainland, where the mercury is forecast to reach 38 to 40°C. Eastern mainland areas and the Peloponnese will see slightly lower highs of 37 to 39°C, while temperatures in the Ionian Islands will hover around 35 to 36°C.

Skies will generally remain clear, though local clouds may form over the central and northern mainland during the midday and afternoon hours. Brief showers are likely in the mountainous areas of Epirus and Macedonia during this time.

Winds in western Greece will be mostly light and variable, picking up slightly from the west-northwest during the midday to afternoon hours.

In the eastern regions, winds will come from the north and will be noticeably stronger at times, especially over the central and northern Aegean, creating breezy to windy conditions.
