NSW: Byzantine Music Day Retreat at the Holy Monastery of Saint George Yellow Rock, 5 November

With His Eminence’s Archbishop Makarios’ blessing, the Byzantine Music School of Australia (NSW branch) is delighted to be presenting a Day Retreat event dedicated to “The Genres of Byzantine Chant”.

The Retreat will take place at St George Monastery, Yellow Rock, hosted generously by the Very Reverend Father Ieronymos and his brotherhood. The day will start with the Divine Liturgy service at the katholikon church of the Holy Monastery. It will be followed by interactive workshops and concluded with a Melisma Ensemble choral performance. The workshops will be run by Mr Basilios Psilacos, Dr Dimitri Koubaroulis, Mr Andrew Psarommatis, and Dr Andrew Mellas. One of the workshops will be run by a very special guest, Fr Damaskinos (Olkinuora) from the Holy Monastery of Xenophontos, Mt Athos.

The program on the day will be as follows:

6:00 – 8:30 am Matins & Divine Liturgy

8:30 – 9:30 am Coffee, Registration, Welcome

9:30 – 4:00 pm Workshops with intermittent breaks for refreshments and lunch

4:00 – 5:00 pm A choral performance of a rare composition by St John Koukouzelis (14th c.) by the Melisma Ensemble under the direction of Dr Dimitri Koubaroulis.

The workshops will be in English, while the morning service and performance chanting will be mostly in Greek and some English. Participation is open to everyone 12 years and older. The workshops are aimed at people who have at least some basic knowledge of Byzantine Chant.
