Metropolitan of Zambia conducts Memorial Service for 168th Anniversary of the passing away of Dionysios Solomos

On Sunday, 9 February 2025, a memorial service was held in the National Garden, at the site surrounding the bust of Dionysios Solomos, marking the 168th anniversary of the passing away of Greece’s National Poet. The service was conducted by His Eminence Metropolitan John of Zambia and Mozambique, who hails from Zakynthos, in honour of Solomos’ contribution to the Greek language, poetry, and national identity.
Despite the winter weather and rain, the event was carried out with deep emotion and reverence. The Choir of Saint George Karitsi, under the direction of maestro Mr. Nikolaos Valsamos, chanted hymns, adding a solemn atmosphere to the occasion. Dr. Eleni Rapti, archaeologist and historian, delivered a speech highlighting the enduring legacy of Dionysios Solomos and the significance of his poetry in shaping Greek national consciousness.
Wreaths were laid by presidents and representatives of Ionian cultural associations, as well as by the president of the Museum of Solomos and Eminent Zakynthians, Ms. Eleni Pylarinou. The ceremony was attended by figures from literature, the arts, science, sports, and the artistic community, along with many friends from Greece and abroad, who paid their respects by placing a flower at the bust of Greece’s great poet.
