Metropolitan of Austria: We strongly condemn the attack on the school in Graz

With deep sorrow and a sense of responsibility, His Eminence Metropolitan Arsenios of Austria and Exarch of Hungary expressed his solidarity with the families and the school community of Graz, who are mourning after the armed attack at a public school in Graz yesterday morning, which resulted in ten fatalities.

“In moments of such trials, faith calls us to stand together—not only with words of consolation but with initiatives that promote security, support, and protection for our young people,” Metropolitan Arsenios emphasized.

I was deeply saddened to learn of the tragic incident at the school in Graz, in which many young people and adults lost their lives. As a church, we are compelled to advocate for peace, consolation, and solidarity during this difficult time.

Our heartfelt condolences go out to all those affected, including the families, classmates, and the entire school community. We grieve with them and share their pain. However, sorrow alone is not enough; we must take concrete action.

The clergy of the Holy Metropolis of Austria are available 24/7 to provide spiritual support to schools and crisis centres.

At the same time, we appeal to our entire society. We cannot stand by while young people are under pressure, resort to violence, or become isolated. Schools, families, communities, and public institutions must decisively combat all forms of psychological violence. We owe it to our children and youth to create safe spaces where they feel seen, valued, and loved.

Let us stand united in both words and actions. Let us listen with open ears and offer helping hands. Let us establish protective structures. It is our shared responsibility to confront hatred, despair, and pain with love and solidarity. Only then can we prevent further tragedies born of need and loneliness.

We categorically condemn such horrific acts of violence in educational settings. At the same time, we call on political and spiritual authorities to intensify their efforts to protect our children and young people, ensuring that these tragedies are never repeated.

In the spirit of brotherhood and unity, I urge all the faithful to come together in love and solidarity so that humanity may overcome fear and darkness.

May the Lord grant peace to the families of the victims and give us the strength to remain united in solidarity, compassion, and responsibility.
