Metropolitan Epifaniy of Kyiv calls for faith and hope amidst turmoil

His Beatitude Metropolitan Epifaniy of Kyiv and all Ukraine said on social media, reflecting on the recent celebration of the Nativity of John the Baptist in Drohobych: “In the heart of Drohobych, a special prayer resounded, honouring John the Baptist—the voice of truth in a world that feared to hear it. On this sacred day, the new iconostasis and frescoes were consecrated in the monastic church dedicated to him, a moment of spiritual joy and unity among brethren, clergy, patrons, and faithful. This prayer lifted up our homeland, seeking peace, the warriors defending it at the cost of their lives, and all who serve goodness and truth.”
He continued, “This prayer, like the life of John the Baptist, answers the call of our times. It is a sign of hope amid turmoil—a ray of light piercing the darkness. Though human circumstances may seem to hinder divine intervention, God’s providence works miracles even when hope seems lost.”
Metropolitan Epifaniy reminded the faithful of the miraculous birth of John the Baptist, “The righteous Zacharias and Elisabeth, advanced in years, received a son as a gift—a sign that nothing is impossible for God. John was sent to prepare the way for the Messiah, fulfilling God’s promise.”
He emphasised the relevance of this feast in today’s context, “As we celebrate John’s Nativity, we praise God who fulfills His promises. This feast inspires us with hope for God’s will to be fulfilled even now, while Ukraine endures aggression. The Lord, then as now, is the same—powerful to make possible what seems impossible. Just as God has humbled tyrants in the past, so too will He humble the forces of evil confronting us today.”
But the Metropolitan stressed that action must accompany faith: “Like John the Baptist, we must be voices in the wilderness—voices of truth, faith, and hope. We cannot remain silent when speaking out is essential. We must hold to the truth, even if inconvenient, and resist falsehood, even if popular.”
Concluding his message, he prayed, “May the intercession, prayers, and example of John the Baptist inspire and strengthen all who seek God’s will, stand for truth, and serve their neighbors. May the Lord grant us victory—not just visible, but spiritual: faith overcoming fear, light dispelling darkness, and love conquering hatred.”
