Melbourne: Joined forces to support displaced children in Victoria

With the blessing of His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia, His Grace Bishop Kyriakos of Melbourne, the Philoptochos Society of Melbourne, Year 5 and 6 students from Oakleigh Grammar and Backpack for kids, organised a heart-warming fundraiser to support displaced children.

The event, which aimed to provide practical support to children facing homelessness, began with a generous donation of 40 empty backpacks from the Philoptochos Society of Melbourne. The students then took part in a fundraising campaign, collecting a variety of items—including clothing, stationery, books, drink bottles, and lunch boxes—that they packed into the backpacks and donated to Backpack for Kids, an organisation dedicated to supporting children living in temporary care or foster homes.

Michelle, a representative from Backpack for Kids, spoke to the students about the scale of the need, informing them that up to 16,500 children in Victoria are currently living in state care, separated from their families. This powerful message resonated deeply with the students, who were eager to make a difference in the lives of these children.

“The students were able to reflect on the significance of their actions and the impact they had on others,” said Ms Smit, a spokesperson for Oakleigh Grammar. “They were proud to have played a part in providing comfort and essentials to children who need it most. The experience also allowed them to reflect on their own lives and made them appreciate how blessed they are.”

Five Loaves who were present thanked the Philoptochos Society of Melbourne and students for inviting them to witness this outpouring of love from the young students, noting that it was inspiring to see how much can be achieved when communities come together to support those in need. “The energy and generosity of the students have made a significant difference,” said a Five Loaves representative. “This initiative has proven how much can be accomplished when people unite for a common cause. We’re truly proud of what has been achieved.”

This initiative highlights the power of teamwork and the profound impact that even small acts of kindness can have on vulnerable communities. Through their efforts, the students of Oakleigh Grammar have not only provided essential supplies to children in need but have also learned valuable lessons in empathy, gratitude, and social responsibility.
