Melbourne: Doxology for the commencement of the new Law Term 2025 at the Church of Saint Eustathios

His Grace Bishop Kyriakos of Melbourne, representing His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia, presided over a Doxology Service marking the Commencement of the 2025 Victorian Law Term.

The Doxology Service took place at the Archdiocesan Church of Saint Eustathios, in the presence of the President of the Administrative Review Tribunal and Judge of the Federal Court of Australia, the Hon. Justice Emilios Kyrou AO, along with members of the Victorian Bar, barristers, solicitors, members of the judiciary and court staff.

At the conclusion of the Doxology Service, His Grace Bishop Kyriakos read out an Encyclical by His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia highlighting that “Law is not merely a profession; it is a vocation—a calling that requires wisdom, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to truth and justice. Those who dedicate their lives to this field are entrusted with the weighty task of upholding the rule of law, defending the rights of the vulnerable, and ensuring that justice is served without fear or favour… In recent years, there has been greater recognition of the mental and emotional strain faced by those in the legal profession… In the Gospel of Matthew, Christ offers words of comfort to all who labour under heavy burdens: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest”.

These words are an invitation to find renewal in God’s presence and to recognise that human strength alone is not sufficient for the weighty work of justice. Rather, through faith, reflection, and the support of one another, those engaged in the legal profession can find the strength to persevere and continue their noble service to society.”
