Majestic Procession of Saint Irene Chrysovalantou’s Icon and Relics in Astoria

The procession of the miraculous icon and the relics of Saint Irene Chrysovalantou through the streets of Astoria was a majestic and deeply Greek affair, taking place at noon on Sunday, 28 July 2024, following the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy presided over by His Grace Bishop Nektarios of Diokleia and Protosyncellus of the Holy Archdiocese of America

This procession was the highlight of the religious feast of the Patriarchal and Stavropegic Monastery of Saint Irene Chrysovalantou, which began on Wednesday, 24 July 2024, and concluded on Sunday. Starting from the Church, the procession moved north on 37th Street, then east on Ditmars Boulevard, turned south on 33rd Street, and stopped at the courtyard of Saints Catherine and George before ending at the courtyard of the Church of Saint Irene. Here, Greek expatriates of all ages gathered, kneeling in anticipation of the Miraculous Icon and relics, praying to Saint Irene for health and blessings for themselves, their relatives, and friends.

During the event, Bishop Nektarios read a message from His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, praising the community for their dedication to preserving the traditions, morals, and customs of their heritage.

Four-Day Festival

In line with tradition, the Patriarchal and Stavropegic Monastery of Saint Irene Chrysovalantou organised a four-day Greek Festival, which began on the afternoon of Thursday, 25 July 2024, and concluded on the evening of Sunday, 28 July 2024. The festival featured a small amusement park, providing entertainment for children and adding to the festive atmosphere.
