‘Lord of the Rings’ is back: Petrounias wins gold in Doha, heads to Tokyo Olympics

Lefteris Petrounias, the phenomenal Greek athlete on gymnastics still rings, won gold at the 2021 Doha World Cup on Friday and qualified for the Tokyo Olympic Games two years after a serious operation on his shoulder.

Dubbed “The Lord of the Rings” for his achievements, Petrounias won gold with a score of 15,500, followed by Brazil’s Arthur Zanetti with 14,933 and Iran’s Mahdi Ahmad Kohani with 14,800.

Besides having been world champion and European champion five times each, Petrounias is also a gold medallist at the Olympic Games of Rio de Janeiro in 2016.

He received several congratulations for Doha on social media, including from Foreign Affairs Minister Nikos Dendias and Alternate Minister Miltiadis Varvitsiotis, Tourism Minister Harry Theoharis, Sports Deputy Minister Lefteris Avgenakis, and the Hellenic Olympic Committee, among others.
