Lemnos: Events of honour and remembrance for the 110th anniversary of The Gallipoli Campaign

On Tuesday, 29 April 2025, events of honour and remembrance for those who fell in The Gallipoli Campaign were held, organised by the Regional Unit of Lemnos and supported by the Municipality of Lemnos, at the Allied Military Cemeteries of Moudros and Portianos, as well as at the sites of the Cultural Associations of Moudros and Portianos.
His Eminence Metropolitan Ierotheos of Lemnos and Agios Efstratios conducted a memorial service at the two allied military cemeteries, while the events were also honoured with their presence by the Member of Parliament of Lesvos, Mr. Charalambos Athanasiou, as a representative of the Hellenic Parliament, the Ambassador of Australia to Greece, Her Excellency Ms. Alison Duncan, accompanied by the Military Attaché, Captain, Ms. Rachel Jones, the Head of Public Relations, Ms. Lucy Kalfagian and her husband, Mr. Richard Palmer, the representative of the Chief of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff, Deputy Commander of the Hellenic Navy, Major General Emmanuel Hatzis, the Honorary Consul of New Zealand, Ms. Ioanna Gouvatsou, the Military Attaché of the Embassy of Great Britain, Captain Sam Law, the First Secretary of the Embassy of India Mr. Balji Nagrath, as well as the diplomatic attachés of the Embassies of Canada Mr. Louis Saint Arnaud and Germany Ms. Charlotte Schwarzer, local authorities, commanders and executives of the armed forces and security forces of Lemnos, representatives of institutions, teachers, students, expatriates and other citizens.
The President of the Municipal Council, Mr. Triantafyllos Katis, representing the Mayor of Lemnos, Ms. Eleonora Georga, laid wreaths at the two Allied Military cemeteries, while in a greeting he addressed at the Allied Cemetery of Moudros, he referred to the message of the anniversary, which is none other than the need to preserve peace.

The events at the Allied Cemeteries of Moudros and Portianos included memorial prayers, wreath-laying, the playing of the National Anthems of the countries represented and greetings from representatives of the authorities.
This was followed by a tour of a photography exhibition in the hall of the Moudros Cultural Association “Pavlos Kountouriotis”, as well as a speech by the President of the War Museum, Lieutenant General (retd.), Mr. Konstantinos Karamesinis, on the topic: “The Role of Lemnos in the Battle of Gallipoli” in the premises of the Portianos Cultural Association.
The program concluded with a screening of a documentary entitled “Anzac Day and Lemnos 110 Years”, produced by the War Museum.
