Legislative initiative for the appointment of 600 clergy in Greek-speaking Patriarchates

A legislative initiative to establish permanent positions in Greek-speaking Patriarchates is being promoted by the Greek government. The issue was raised and discussed in the Council of Ministers, which convened on Friday, 31 January 2025.
In his introductory remarks, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis spoke of a joint initiative of the Ministries of Education and Foreign Affairs, which will collaborate over a three-year period to appoint 600 clergy to the Greek-speaking Patriarchates. He noted that it is “an initiative of great, important national importance.”
At the end of the meeting, government spokesman Mr. Pavlos Marinakis stated that the provisions for the establishment of permanent positions in the Greek-speaking Patriarchates “aim to ensure that the ecclesiastical needs of the diaspora will be served by Greek clergy, as well as to support the Ancient Patriarchates and the Holy Monastery of Mt. Sinai.”
