Key dates in selection of new Archbishop of Crete announced

A key date for the election of a new Archbishop of Crete appears to be Dec. 28, when the Holy Eparchial Synod of the Church of Crete is due to convene. According to reports, hierarchs of the Church of Crete will hold a secret ballot during the session to elect three candidates for the new Archbishop.

The same sources said the names of the three candidate Metropolitans will then be presented to hierarchs of the Sacred and Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople on Jan. 11 – the prospective election date for a new Archbishop of Crete.

Hierarchs of the Eparchial Synod of the Church of Crete unanimously voted to relieve Archbishop Irineos from his duties late last month due to his deteriorating health condition.
