Journalist George Hatzivasilis passes away

The news of the loss of George Hatzivasilis, a distinguished journalist in the Greek Diaspora press, has caused sadness within the Greek community in Australia and more broadly.

George Hatzivasilis, who passed away on Sunday, 8 June 2025, was born in 1935 in Alexandria, Egypt. His parents were originally from Symi in the Dodecanese. After the Suez Crisis in 1956, his family returned to Greece for a short time and then emigrated to Australia and settled in Adelaide. There, George Hatzivasilis worked as a technician at the Advertiser newspaper and later switched to journalism, writing for many Greek community newspapers in the country, with his last stop being “Kosmos” in Sydney, where he served as editor-in-chief of the newspaper for more than three decades.

The deceased had shared with “Our People Their Stories” aspects of his personal journey, from Egypt to Greece and then to the distant fifth continent, as well as his journey in the Greek Diaspora press and his concerns for the Greek community.
