Holy Diocese of Chora: Celebration of the 70th Anniversary of the Cypriot Community of Apostle Andrew in Sunshine

On Saturday evening, 24 May 2025, over 400 people participated in the festive events for the 70th anniversary of the founding of the Cypriot Community of Apostle Andrew in Sunshine, Melbourne.
His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia was represented by His Grace Bishop Evmenios of Chora, delivered a greeting, conveying the paternal love and warm wishes of the Shepherd of Australia, His Eminence Archbishop Makarios.
The event was also honoured with his presence by the High Commissioner of the Republic of Cyprus to Australia, Mr. Antonios Sammoutis.

In his address, His Grace emphasised: “This anniversary is not just a flashback to the past. It is an invitation to boldness. After 70 years of stability, we are called to raise the bar higher, inspire the youth, and build the future with faith and courage.”
At another point, he made special reference to Cyprus, saying: “The Cypriot people still carry the wounds of occupation and the anguish of injustice. And yet, through this pain, their faith has not been extinguished, nor has the flame of tradition. Cyprus is wounded, but spiritually upright. And your presence here is living proof.”

His Grace Bishop Evmenios paid tribute to the priests who served the community over the years, most of whom have now passed away, saying: “May their memory be eternal. Their work laid the foundation for what we continue today.”
Special mention was made to Fr. Evangelos Georgiou, parish priest of the community, for his quiet but dynamic and essential ministry, as well as to Ms. Eleni Christodoulou, President of the Cypriot Community, for her many years of selfless service to the people of God.

The evening continued with Cypriot dances, traditional songs, emotion and unity, highlighting the resilience, vitality and continuity of the Orthodox Cypriot presence in Australia.
