Hierarchical Divine Liturgy celebrated in honour of St. Cyril I at St. Stephen’s Church, Yeşilköy

On Friday, 27 June 2025, a Hierarchical Divine Liturgy was celebrated at the Holy Church of Saint Stephen in Yeşilköy, commemorating the memory of the Holy Hieromartyr Cyril I, the Loukaris, Patriarch of Constantinople.

The service was presided over by His Eminence Metropolitan Theodoros of Seleucia, concelebrated by His Eminence Elder Metropolitan Apostolos of Derkoi. In the evening, the Great Vespers of the Feast was also held. Displayed on the solea for veneration were the Holy Icon and a relic of St. Cyril the Hieromartyr.

St. Cyril I, Loukaris, Patriarch of Constantinople, was officially added to the Orthodox Church’s calendar of saints by a Patriarchal and Synodal decree in January 2022. His feast day holds special significance for the Holy Metropolis of Derkoi, as his martyrdom took place in the historic community of St. Stephen’s, which ecclesiastically belongs to the Metropolis.

For this reason, the annual Holy Feast in honour of the newly glorified Saint was established at St. Stephen’s Church on June 27 each year. This celebration serves to bless and spiritually strengthen the faithful and to perpetually honour the memory and martyrdom of the Saint.

In his sermon, Metropolitan Theodoros spoke about the rich legacy of St. Cyril, highlighting his connection as a brother of the Holy Monastery of the Dormition of the Theotokos in Ankarathos, Crete. He also offered blessings for upcoming name days and for the approaching 30th anniversary of his episcopal consecration.

Following the sermon, Metropolitan Apostolos of Derkoi warmly welcomed Metropolitan Theodoros, who was visiting the Metropolis of Derkoi for the first time, wishing him a fruitful and God-blessed ministry in the Mother Church.
