Greece sends aid to raging Cyprus wildfire

Greece has sent two Canadair firefighting aircraft to help fight a wildfire that was raging uncontrollably in the area of Paphos, southwest Cyprus on Tuesday.

According to sources, the fire broke out on Tuesday afternoon in a rugged area with dry vegetation and trees, and was spreading fast.

Five nearby villages (Polemi, Psathi, Choulou, Kοurdakas and Lemona) were evacuated, while homes and livestock units were reportedly burnt.

Cyprus has activated the Pyrsos national plan and requested aid from Jordan, Israel, Greece and through the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism’s rescEU.
