Greece: Police dismantle gang behind church burglaries

Greek police have dismantled a criminal gang responsible for a series of burglaries targeting churches, authorities said on Friday, following the arrest of four suspects.
In a statement, the Hellenic Police (ELAS) said the group is linked to at least 33 thefts from places of worship, primarily in rural areas, with estimated illegal proceeds exceeding €197,000.
Seized items included religious jewelry, knives, a shotgun, ammunition, three vehicles, and €550 in cash.
The suspects allegedly used two vehicles – one for scouting potential targets and another to carry out the burglaries, mostly during nighttime hours. Police said the gang gained entry by forcing open doors or windows using burglary tools, while wearing gloves, dark clothing, and full-face masks to conceal their identities.
Inside the churches, they reportedly stole cash from donation boxes and charity funds, as well as religious artifacts and votive offerings, many made of gold or silver. They then fled in getaway vehicles with altered or hidden license plates to avoid identification.
Police said the investigation is ongoing.
