Greece: New sustainable tourism scheme to boost mountains launched

The Ministry of Tourism has launched a new initiative called “Sustainable Mountain Tourism Destination,” which seeks to strengthen tourism at Greece’s alpine destinations and bolster infrastructure upgrades in the areas themselves.
The relevant decision signed by Tourism Minister Olga Kefalogianni was published in the Government Gazette. It provides for the joint operation throughout the year of a ski resort and a refuge combined with hotel accommodation in a single area.
The “Sustainable Mountain Tourism Destination” scheme will be developed in accordance with the spatial/urban planning framework of every given area, while taking into account any special protection regime for areas and forest areas.
This initiative, following the support program for ski resorts through the EU’s Recovery Fund and a recently adopted law for their operation throughout the year, is part of a holistic strategy for the development of mountain tourism and the extension of the tourist season.
