Festive events in the Holy Diocese of Adelaide

With the blessing of His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia, the Holy Diocese of Adelaide will be hosting the following festive events within the framework of the festive ecclesiastical period of theDodekaemeron (The Holy Twelve Days) of Christmas:

On Sunday 22 December 2024 at 6:00pm, in the Sports and Performing Arts Centre of St George College, a statewide Christmas concert-Kalanda is organised by the Central Philoptochos Ladies with the participation of all Parishes-Communities. The choirs of “Saint George” and “Saint Spyridon” Colleges and of various parishes and cultural organisations, will sing traditional carols-kalanda from various regions of Greece.

On Thursday, 2 January 2025, at 7p.m., in the Archiepiscopal Church of St Sophia (The Holy Wisdom of God), His Grace Bishop Silouan of Adelaide will bless and cut the vasilopita for the clergy and faithful of our city. This traditional ceremony is one more opportunity for us to receive the blessing of the Church for the new year.

On Sunday, 12 January 2025, at 12:30p.m., the Blessing of the waters will take place at the Glenelg Jetty in the presence of State and Municipal authorities and the Consul General of Greece. A procession will precede the ceremony from the Holy Cross Church to the point where the Blessing of the waters and the immersion of the cross into the sea will take place. The procession and the Blessing will be led by His Grace Bishop Silouan of Adelaide with the participation of the city’s clergy. Following the Blessing of the waters, the official proceedings of the three-day Glenelg Greek Festival, organised by the Inter-Communities Council of the Holy Diocese of Adelaide, will take place.

Also, within the framework of the Dodekaemeron, an exhibition of books, religious items and Christmas presents is being held in the hall of St Nectarios Church, organised by the Central Philoptochos Ladies, from 1 December to 24 December 2024. The exhibition includes a rich variety of orthodox books ​​for all ages (in Greek and English) for our spiritual edification.
