Establishment of a new Greek Community in Ghana

In the events hall of the Holy Metropolis of Accra, near the Cathedral of the Transfiguration of Christ, in the Abeka-Lapaz area, the cutting of the traditional Vasilopita of the Greek Community of Accra took place on Saturday, 15 February 2025.
His Eminence Metropolitan Daniel of Accra blessed and cut the Vasilopita, who also conveyed the heartfelt wishes of His Beatitude Pope and Patriarch Theodore of Alexandria and All Africa, to the Greeks and Cypriots of Ghana.
Present at the event were Ms. Marianna Gavriil, Honorary Consul General of Greece and Cyprus to the Republic of Ghana, and Mr. Konstantinos Demertzis, President of the Greek Community of Accra, who in their speeches warmly welcomed and praised the organisation of the event.
The Secretary of the Greek and Cypriot Consulate in Accra, Ms. Sheba Moffat, also spoke.
Hellenism in Ghana numbers approximately 50 active members, who engage in intense business activity, helping the country’s economy and developing strong bonds of friendship and cooperation between the countries.

All members of the Community, along with their family members, as well as several philhellenes with their associates, enjoyed the gathering and the dinner offered.
A particularly important and historic moment was the formation of the Greek Community and the signing of the Founding Declaration, where all members approved its new Constitution.
This is the first time that the Greek Community of Accra is being attempted to be legalised as a recognised Association in Ghana and Greece, at the competent Ministries of Foreign Affairs.
This particularly pleases the Greeks, who will now be expressed by the official Board of Directors that will be elected.
The Greeks and Greek-Cypriots in Ghana are gaining an official voice, anticipating closer cooperation among all, for the progress and prosperity of the community.
