Ecumenical Patriarch: “We hope that the wounds caused by the wildfires will be healed”

His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew expressed his support to those affected by the devastating wildfires in Greece, during his homily following the Great Vespers of the Apodosis (leave-taking) of the Feast of the Dormition of the Theotokos, at the Church of the Dormition of the Theotokos, in the village of Agioi Theodoroi in Imbros.

“We celebrate the grace of the Virgin Mary but we cannot help thinking of our brothers and sisters who are being tested in neighbouring Alexandroupolis, in the Holy Metropolis of Didymoteicho, Orestiada and Soufli, which is very close to the Greek-Turkish border,” the Ecumenical Patriarch noted.

He added, “It is a tragedy that comes in addition to the many tragedies that Greece has experienced. And not only Greece, all of Europe, and our country too. I am informed that a wildfire is raging in Çanakkale too. We hope that this tragedy will belong to the past as soon as possible and that everyone will return to their daily lives. We hope that the wounds caused by the wildfires will be healed. May God protect everyone from such great disasters, which leave people homeless, destroy their livelihoods, their belongings, their crops, their animals, their fields. May God bless us!”
