Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew to visit Athens for the 150th Anniversary of the Church of Saint Nicholas of the Ecumenical Patriarchate

The Representative Office of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Athens is organising festive events for the 150th anniversary (1875-2025) of the construction of the Church of St. Nicholas of the Merciful Society of Athens (Vasilissis Sophias and Ploutarchou 1), which has been granted to the Ecumenical Patriarchate.

The events will be honoured with the high presence of His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew.

More Specifically:

On Saturday, 10 May 2025, at 7 p.m., at the Amphitheater of the American School of Classical Studies in Kolonaki, an academic evening will be held with presentations by experts on 19th-century Athens, on the Benevolent Society of Athens, Andreas Syngros, as a national benefactor and founder of the Church of St. Nicholas, but also on the aesthetics of the architecture and Iconography of the Church.

The event will be greeted by His Eminence Metropolitan Theodoritos of Laodicea, Director of the Representative Office of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Athens.

His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew will make an appropriate address, followed by the awarding of the Cross of Saint Nicholas to the benefactors of the Church.

The event will be accompanied musically by the Athens Chamber Choir (under the auspices of the National Opera) and the composer-musician Evanthia Reboutsika with a quartet of musicians.

The event will be presented by journalist Dora Anagnostopoulou.

The event is sponsored by the Archon Protomaistor of the Great Church of Christ, Mr. Georgios Prokopiou.

On Sunday, 11 May 2025, a festive Divine Liturgy will be celebrated at the Church of Saint Nicholas, presided over by His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew and concelebrated by His Beatitude Archbishop Ieronymos of Athens and All Greece.
