Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew pays respects at Pope Francis’ tomb in Rome

His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew visited the tomb of the late Pope Francis at the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome on Monday, laying white flowers and praying for the repose of his soul.

Speaking to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency, he said that throughout the 12 years of his papacy, “Pope Francis and I shared a close friendship and collaboration for the good of our churches, of Christianity, and of humanity.”

His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew added that he and Pope Leo XIV, who he met on Monday, plan to jointly complete a pilgrimage to Nicaea (modern-day Iznik) in Turkey this year, marking 1,700 years since the First Ecumenical Council, a trip Pope Francis had planned before his death.
