Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Greece, Georgios Kotsiras: “The Church’s role is important in the effort to combat human trafficking”

The contribution of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Greece and the constructive role of the Church in combating human trafficking and its contribution to social awareness was referred to by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Georgios Kotsiras, in his address on Tuesday, at the opening of the Panhellenic Conference on the theme “The responsibility of humanity for the healing of society from human slavery. The ecclesiastical proposal, is co-organised by the Church of Greece and the Ecumenical Patriarchate, through the Holy Archdiocese of Thyateira and Great Britain.

As Minister Kotsiras underlined, human trafficking is one of the greatest threats of organised crime worldwide. The emphasis that Greece places on combating human trafficking is also reflected in its priorities as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for the period 2025-2026. These include, as Mr. Kotsiras noted, the prevention and response to sexual violence against women and the elimination of all forms of violence and abuse against children.

The Deputy Foreign Minister also emphasised that in Greece’s ongoing efforts to address human trafficking, the Church undoubtedly has an important role to play through its spiritual guidance, social awareness, strengthening social cohesion and practical support for vulnerable social groups.

Mr. Kotsiras also highlighted the importance of cooperation between Church and State in combating this heinous crime, which, as he characteristically stated, “concerns us all.”
