Church of Greece expresses deep solidarity with Patriarchate of Antioch following terrorist attack in Damascus

In response to the deadly and destructive terrorist attack on the Greek Orthodox Church of Prophet Elia in the Dwel’a district of Damascus, the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece, through its President, His Beatitude Archbishop Ieronymos of Athens and All Greece, sent a message of solidarity to His Beatitude Patriarch John X of Antioch.

The message addressed to the Patriarch of Antioch, expressed deep love and brotherly unity. It acknowledged the tragic events of Sunday, 22 June 2025, when many Christian brothers and sisters lost their lives or were injured during the terrorist attack that occurred during the evening Divine Liturgy.

The Church of Greece, sharing in the suffering of the devout Orthodox faithful of the Antiochian Orthodox Church during this painful ordeal, conveyed heartfelt fraternal understanding to His Beatitude. The message praised the steadfast and unconquered spirit of the Patriarchate’s flock, which remains firmly anchored in faith, hope, and love.

The Holy Synod of Greece prayed earnestly for the enlightenment and repentance of those who commit such terrorist acts, especially when they target religious sites and innocent civilians. It also expressed hope that all future occurrences of such atrocities will be prevented.

In conclusion, the Church of Greece assured the Patriarchate of Antioch of its unwavering solidarity and every form of support to the suffering Orthodox sister Church of Antioch.

The letter closed with a fervent prayer to the Lord of Peace to protect the beloved homeland of His Beatitude from all dangers, while sending the Archbishop’s holy kiss as a sign of deep brotherly love.
