Celebrated for its in-depth storytelling and exceptional archival material, Behind the Curtain (Παρασκήνιο) has long been regarded as a cornerstone of Greek public television. Over the decades, it has featured many of the most influential figures in Greek culture, offering intimate portraits through personal testimonies, interviews, and rare audiovisual archives.
ERT World now presents, for the first time, episodes from the final season of the series, spotlighting distinguished Greeks such as Domna Samiou, Manolis Korres, Mario Vitti, Maro Douka, and others. The series is curated by acclaimed filmmakers including Lakis Papastathis, Takis Chatzopoulos, Giorgos Skevas, Lefteris Xanthopoulos, and Katerina Evangelakou.
Airing this Sunday, May 11 at 11:00 AM (Athens Time), this episode of Paraskinio is dedicated to Domna Samiou, a legendary figure in the preservation and revival of Greek traditional music. From the age of 13, she committed her life with extraordinary dedication to the study, performance, and transmission of Greece’s rich folk music heritage.
Her early musical training began under the guidance of Simon Karas at the Society for the Dissemination of National Music, where she studied Byzantine and folk music, as well as the principles of field research, all while attending night school.
Domna Samiou performed extensively across Greece, appearing in countless concerts and receiving numerous tributes and honors. She collaborated with leading Greek and international musicians, musicologists, folklorists, and ethnomusicologists, while mentoring and promoting a new generation of artists.
Through interviews with close friends and collaborators, along with never-before-seen archival footage, this episode of Behind the Curtain offers a rich journey through the life and legacy of one of Greece’s most respected cultural ambassadors.
