Athens to launch 24-hour public transport pilot on July 5

The Athens metro, tram and selected bus lines will operate on a 24-hour basis for the first time as part of a pilot program set for Saturday, 5 July 2025, Alternate Infrastructure and Transport Minister Konstantinos Kyranakis has announced.
The initiative aims to offer safe and convenient night-time transport, particularly for younger residents enjoying Athens’ nightlife.
“We must implement measures to send a message to their parents that they will return home safely, that they won’t drive under the influence or engage in risky behavior,” Kyranakis told Parliament.
The minister expressed his gratitude to employees and trade unions of public transport operators STASY, OSY and OASA for their support and constructive proposals.
He said if the trial proves successful, the government would conduct a viability study to identify on what days and dates a 24-hour service could operate.
