Announcement regarding the decision to utilise the premises of the Prinkipo Orphanage

The possibilities of utilising the space of the Prinkipo Orphanage were examined by the Holy and Sacred Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, on Tuesday, 3 June 2025, during its last regular meeting for this month, following a detailed briefing by the Archon Grand Hartofylax of the Great Church of Christ and Community supporter Mr. Panteleimon Vigas.
As noted in the relevant press release of the Ecumenical Patriarchate: “Following many fruitless attempts to find funding for the restoration of the wooden building complex of the Orphanage, which, after the imposed cessation of its operation in the 1960s, was abandoned to the ravages of time and suffered extensive damage, the Patriarch and the synodal Hierarchs, after examining a relevant study requested by the Patriarchate, unanimously decided to accelerate the necessary actions in order to develop ecotourism activities in the said area, completely in harmony with the environment and architectural character of the Princes’ Islands. The decision was made with respect for the historical legacy of the Greek Orphanage, which over time served the needs of the Greek Community, and with the sustainable development of the Marmara island complex in mind.
The next steps towards the implementation of the above decision will be taken in the immediate future by a special Committee to be appointed by the Ecumenical Patriarchate.”
