New church consecrated on Imvros, in presence of Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew
The Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, His All Holiness Bartholomew I, on Tuesday attended the dedication of a new cathedral in the village of Schinoudi, on the northeast Aegean isle of Imvros, his native island.
The consecration of the new cathedral, dedicated to St. Tryphonas, came on the saint’s feast day, Feb. 1, and was officiated by the Ecumenical Patriarchate’s Metropolitan of Imvros and Tenedos, His Eminence Kyrillos.
Construction of the church was funded by the Association of Imvros natives of Macedonia-Thrace, in cooperation with His Eminence Metropolitan Kyrillos, and with donations coming from around the world on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the enthronement of the Ecumenical Patriarch.
Among the faithful in attendance, and representing the Greek state, was Deputy Foreign Minister Andreas Katsaniotis, who holds the ecclesiastical diplomacy and expatriate Greeks portfolio.
A day earlier, His All Holiness Bartholomew officiated at the Vespers at the St. Marina Church, also in Schinoudi.
